Rohana Weerasinghe reminds the public of the UNP’s atrocities

The National Organization of Sri Lankan artists held a public meeting in support of the Presidential candidate Mahinda Rajapakse, at Nugegoda, on 25.10.2005. We produce below a literal translation of some extracts from veteran musician Rohana Weerasinghe’s speech reported in Divayina (27.10.2005)
“…The UNP can never give up their thuggery and vile acts (merakam, jadakam). They did not allow us to erect even this stage [for the meeting]. They defaced the posters we exhibited.”
Commenting on the UNP presidential candidate Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe, Rohana Weerasinghe had to say this of the past track record of the UNP at a time during which Mr. Wickremasinghe has been a prominent leader of the UNP:
“…The UNP released Gonawala Sunil from prison and gave him a JP post; tortured students who were against the white paper on education; brutally repressed the ’80 strike and killed comrade Somapala; burnt down the Jaffna library; paved the way for the LTTE to wage a war…. “
